Canada Post computers up and running on Tuesday after crashing on Wednesday

As of 1 pm Tuesday afternoon, the Canada Post computers are back up and running at the Fort Nelson post office.  The hard drive crashed last Wednesday afternoon, resulting in limited services for customers.  Lead Hand, Diana Belfour, says, “The whole computer system went down – we could not do money orders or money grams.  For people mailing parcels, we told them how to do that online.  They could choose the service they wanted, print the label, and bring it in to be mailed.”
Belfour says that though the problem was clearly an inconvenience to customers, people were generally very understanding about it, and the staff want to thank the public for their patience while the system was down.  Customers reported that it was relatively easy to pick the service they wanted online, print the barcode label for tracking, and bring the parcel in for mailing.
The debit machine was down, so cash was required for all financial transactions.  Staff is now in the process of inputting their manual records, right down to the sale of stamps.
A delay in getting the system back in service was expected because the parts and software (internal to Canada Post) had to be ordered.  Local IT support Total Electronics finished the task.
Canada Post Area Superintendent, Dee Peterson, says, “All of the mail was still moving through the system as usual (drop off and delivery), and we were able to deliver collect items such as CODs and Customs, but on a cash basis only. I want to apologise to our customers for the inconvenience, and thank everyone for all of their understanding, especially at this hectic time of year.  We are so reliant on our systems.”
Peterson continued, “From a management standpoint, the staff in Fort Nelson did an awesome job of assisting customers in every way they could.” The system crash was isolated to Fort Nelson and did not affect any other facilities.
