Christmas comes early to R.L. Angus School – 28 new iPads

When we returned to school this fall, we were surprised to find 28 brand new iPads waiting to be used.
Later we found out that it was Encana that generously donated $25,000 towards the “Learning With iPads” Project.
While talking with one of my teachers about the iPads we realised that “learning with iPads” has been so successful because it supplements the good things we do already. iPads have become just one more tool in our pencil cases.
Let me tell you what I and some other kids at R.L. Angus school like about the iPads…
Paullina enjoys creating e-books with sound effects, music and more.  Her class was challenged to write a book report using the app “Book Creator”. When Sam was asked what he likes about the iPads he said he likes the wide variety of fun learning games. Many of them teach you math, science, mapping, and problem solving skills.
Jordan and Gracie love using “Monster Physics”.  In this game you create your own monster, design you own inventions and complete challenges and missions.  All along the way you learn important physics concepts such as gravity, friction, speed and velocity. My favourite app is “Learn the World”.  The purpose of this game is to win flags while learning geography.
All the grade 6s used “Keynote” on the iPads to make a slideshow for their unit on “The Microscopic World”.  It’s easy to use Internet resources and there are so many different ways to present your learning on the iPad.  As Savannah says, “Learning on the iPad makes everything look beautiful.”  With the iPads students are able to work independently on projects while having the opportunity to create animations, movies, slideshows in really creative ways.
Students in Ms. Dogherty’s class have painted really cool watercolour self-portraits with the help of an app called, “Mobile Monet”.
In the New Year I am looking forward to using an app called “Motion X GPS”.  It allows you to see your position on a map, record tracks, set waypoints, and navigate using the compass.
Every class is happy when they see the iPad cart roll into their classroom or when they visit the SMART Board Room where the iPads are stored.
Well, as I already said, the addition of the 28 iPads was a great early Christmas present to R.L. Angus. We are looking forward to the New Year as we have the opportunity to learn more new and exciting things using our iPads!
