Over this past weekend the Northern Rockies Fire Rescue Department had the opportunity to participate in a 2 ½ day weekend training session that concentrated on Motor Vehicle Rescue techniques and extrication. As part of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1,001 standards for firefighter training requirements, both experienced and new (recruit) fire crew members actively participated in the identifying and mitigating of accident scene hazards, scene stabilization, vehicle extrication, and patient removal and rescue.
The training involved the Fire Crews responding to the NRFR Training Grounds to perform the practical duties of cutting, spreading, and ramming several vehicles (generously supplied by Archie’s Autowrecking & Towing) positioned in numerous “accident” positions and performing a variety of patient removal and rescues.
The overall success of the training will allow the fire rescue department to be better skilled in their responses to motor vehicle incidents involving our community and visitors on our highways who are involved in an incident.
By the end of the training sessions the crews not only had a much greater understanding, confidence and skill level in dealing with a motor vehicle incident but also gained a vast respect for new car technologies and how they can affect our response abilities to current and future emergencies.
