Saturday, June 8th was a glorious day in Fort Nelson as 120 participants joined 20 teams at Art Fraser Memorial Park for the 12th annual Canadian Cancer Society Relay for Life held here.
For 12 years, the citizens of Fort Nelson have come together to support families and friends going through cancer. This is a remarkable achievement at a time when over 1,000 northern British Columbians are diagnosed with cancer each year.
Relay organisers Laura and Julie McGuire were thrilled with the participation and community spirit at the event. “This Relay means A LOT to me, and as I’ve discovered, means a tremendous amount to a lot of people here,” says Laura. “I’ve met a lot of wonderful people and shared our stories and experiences. It definitely brings people together.”
The volunteer organising committee went above and beyond in the weeks leading up to the Relay to ensure the people of Fort Nelson would be welcomed once again to this annual event. Laura expressed her appreciation for the committee members, “without all the passionate volunteers, it wouldn’t matter what I did.”
Thanks also go to the donors, sponsors, and participants.
Contributions to the Relay For Life make it possible for northerners facing cancer to benefit from ongoing Canadian Cancer Society funded research, prevention, and support programs. This year’s event in Fort Nelson exceeded $22,000!
Congratulations to Bill Rae of the Cat Rental Store team who won two tickets from Central Mountain Air. Also congratulations to Tyrell Noseworthy on the Angus All Stars team who won the 30 minute helicopter ride from Qwest Helicopters.
Thanks to everyone for bringing their passion to Relay for Life. This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Canadian Cancer Society. For 75 years we have been with you in the fight for life. We have been relentless in our commitment to fund research and support Canadians touched by cancer. Your donation may very well save your own life or the life of someone you love.
