Commenting on the four month suspension handed down by the Law Society of B.C. Fort Nelson lawyer Nathan Bauder said he was: “grateful for the opportunity to respond to recent events and thank the many clients and supporters who expressed understanding towards my circumstances.
“Approximately three years ago I exercised very poor judgment and acted dishonestly in a personal property transaction, unrelated to any client. As a professional, like any doctor, accountant, engineer or police officer, I am held to a higher standard as part of my oath as a public officer. I failed to do so in this instance. I apologise and I am worthy of sanction. Arrangements will be in place to ensure my practice continues with the least disruption possible,” Bauder said.
“For close to eight years I have served Fort Nelson as a lawyer, community booster and volunteer. I’m proud to say that I’ve acted for thousands of clients all with utmost honesty and integrity.
“I’ve successfully conveyed hundreds of properties. From wayward Koreans and tourists, local businesses, to single parents and low income individuals, my door is always open to those needing consultations and advice.
“As a young first year law student I happened to meet an older gentleman and lawyer at an event. I heeded the advice of a certain Mr. Schuck to ‘go north to Fort Nelson young man’ and since then I’ve held no regrets following his sage advice,” he said.
“I’ve helped First Nations, women’s shelters, and others pro bono or at a discounted fee. I provide an alternative to long journeys south for legal advice or from having no representation at all. My cellular is well known and used often to those unfortunate enough to find themselves in distress or police custody on the weekend or late night. Naturally, I’m always talking to residents at the grocery store or post office who need a ‘quick question’ answered and I’m glad to lend an ear. As a professional in a smaller community all of this is expected and I’m proud to have done so.
“To be clear, I seek neither recognition nor acceptance of what I’ve done. That is not the purpose of this response. In the end, I simply want to assure the residents of Fort Nelson that I remain committed to serving my clients (past, present, and future) and the community.
“Regardless of income, day or night, my office remains open at Mile 300 to those in need of legal advice or to those simply needing a shoulder or ear to borrow. See you at Overwaitea or IGA!” Nathan Bauder said
