Contract awarded for Texaco Bridge replacement at Buick Creek

FORT ST. JOHN – A $3-million contract has been awarded for the replacement of the Texaco Bridge on Buick Creek north of Fort St. John, improving the bridge for heavy commercial traffic and making it safer for all users.
The bridge crosses Umback Creek on Buick Creek Road, approximately 70 km north of Fort St. John.
• The $3-million contract for construction has been awarded to Surespan Construction Ltd. of North Vancouver.
• Work will start in April and is scheduled to be completed by the end of September.
• Shoulders will be widened for 160m of Buick Creek Road, 80m on either side of the bridge to match the new wider bridge.
• The new bridge will have a 10.2m wide travelling surface. The existing bridge is only 7.3 m wide.
• The new structure will significantly widen the surface of the bridge and the approach road to allow for safe and comfortable passage of two vehicles in an area that experiences a considerable amount of large truck traffic.
• The new bridge will support future expansion of the 85 tonne route, which is a network of roads that have been pre-approved by the ministry to accommodate these extra heavy loads, reducing the time it takes to issue overweight permits.
• The faster approval times for the movement of heavy loads along Buick Creek Road will allow industry to be more responsive and efficient and will contribute to the economic efficiency of the local natural gas industry.
“As we continue to develop our resources and communities, I’m pleased we’ve been able to continue making improvements to our transportation infrastructure. Replacing the older Texaco Bridge with a structure designed for higher capacity is a good example of putting words into action.” Said Peace River North MLA Pat Pimm
