The Roy Gairdner Memorial Fastball Tournament was started in 1996 by the family of Roy Gairdner. His brothers and sisters, sons, and family up picked pop cans along the Alaska Highway from Fort Nelson to Sikanni in order to help raise funds for the tournament.  The tournament ran for 15 great years, with teams from Fort Nelson, Hay River, and beyond.  It was a premier event for fastball for the whole time it ran.
Three years have gone by since the tournament was last hosted.  2011 was rained out and last year there just weren’t enough folks with the time to make it happen. Elsie Ashdown, Roy’s sister, worked with Casey, Roy’s son, and the rest of the family to determine that if they weren’t going to host the tournament again in the foreseeable future, they should give the money held in the account for the tournament to a good cause – to give back to Fort Nelson, the community that supported the tournament all those years. Casey came to Fort Nelson on December 15th and organised a family Christmas party. At that party they made their contribution to the Fort Nelson Hospital Foundation from the Tournament.  The Hospital Foundation was shocked to get the donation of $10,973.15.
President Laurie Dolan said, “The Hospital Foundation is so pleased to receive this contribution.  We are honoured that the Gairdner Family chose the FNHF as the recipient for this donation.  This will leave a legacy on behalf of the Gairdners that will benefit the Community.”
“I have to say that without the hard work of my aunts, uncles, cousins, and Ms. Margot Bailey the tournaments would not have been possible! I also cannot forget the whole community for coming out year after year and showing their support.  I really wanted to write a list of people that helped out every year and post it but there is so many people to thank and I know that they know who they are!  We made a lot of memories over the years.  Thanks friends and family,” says Casey Gairdner.
