On Sunday, January 6th at 3:16 pm the Fire Rescue Department received several calls from the community advising that there was heavy black smoke and a possible vehicle fire in the area of 49th Ave and 46th Street. As crews were organising to respond, the heavy black smoke was clearly visible from several areas of town confirming that there was in fact a large fire in the area. As the first arriving fire apparatus and duty officer arrived, the fire was located in the M & M Resources compound where crews found a fully involved John Deere loader burning between a commercial trailer and large sawdust pile. Lines were deployed with both career staff and paid-on-call firefighters to quickly bring the fire under control before it could spread to other equipment. Overhaul was completed to ensure that there was no further danger to the property and cause of the fire was not able to be determined due to the amount of damage to the loader involved. An All Clear was called; command terminated and all fire apparatus and personnel returned to the fire station at 4:30 pm without further incident, Fire Chief Gord McCleary reported.
