EDMONTON – In response to a new report on oil sands contamination in Alberta’s lakes released Monday by Queens University and Environment Canada scientists, and published in the upcoming edition of the journal “Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences”, Greenpeace Canada Climate and Energy Campaigner Mike Hudema said:
“This study is a damning indictment of the industry-led monitoring system that governments use to approve new tar sands projects. This research shows that toxin levels in Alberta’s water systems have been rising for decades in lock-step with the increase in tar sands production. It is time to put further expansion on hold, while we determine the impact of these water-borne poisons on human health and our environment.”
