A reader dropped off a copy of the Canadian Owners and Pilots Association Flight newspaper dated November 2012. On the Plane Talk page was the following from a pilot.
“On July 4th I was en route from Whitehorse to Dawson Creek and I stopped in at the Fort Nelson airport for fuel and a pit stop. The airport is extremely busy, particularly with helicopter traffic serving the oil patch.
“Even though it was mid afternoon and most of the helicopters were out and working, it still looked like shades of Viet Nam.
“Well, with gas priced there at $2.02 a litre I received my landing fee invoice of $20 (plus tax for a total $22.40). This makes Fort Nelson a stop that I will probably take a miss on the next time I’m travelling the Alaska Highway Route.
“I know things are expensive in the North, but the landing fee for small personal aircraft just puts the icing on the cake and my assumption is that the community that runs the airport really doesn’t care about the air tourism dollars that the airport could bring to their town.
“Remember to check the COPA Places to Fly section and look for the GA friendly sites.
“It’s too bad…”
