One day in September, Ms. Hay got us a classroom pet. It was a hamster. The hamster was brown and white. We named her Lily. Lily loved to run in a ball at night and in her wheel in the cage. She looked very pretty and her favourite food was corn.
In Language Arts, we made up a story about Lily getting loose and then it happened! We came to school and Lily was really loose. We tried to catch her using her food, then we tried live traps. But all we caught were mice! We never did find Lily but we hope she is safe somewhere.
Ms. Hay went to Prince George in October and she brought back a little tiny dwarf hamster. He is very small and brownish coloured. He has grown much bigger but he is still smaller than Lily. He likes to run around in his ball. He goes all over the school and it is funny watching him run. He is hard to catch because he runs very fast so we named him “Speedy”!
Speedy also likes to dig in his wood chips and hide in his purple igloo. We feed him hamster pellets, seeds, corn and little green o’s that look like green cheerios. We all take turns being the Hamster Handler. When it’s our turn, we feed him, give him fresh water, try to pet, hold and get him to feed out of our hands. He is pretty shy but he is getting braver. When we are finished with the chores, we write in our class journal and say what Speedy was doing that day.
