Kanta Reddy receives Rachel’s Challenge “International Educator of the Year” award

School District 81 Community Links Coordinator Ms. Kanta Reddy has been recognised for her significant commitment to the Rachel’s Challenge program.  Kanta was named its International Educator of the Year at the organisation’s June 22nd Summit Meeting in Plano, Texas, USA.
With the sponsorship of Nexen Inc. and the Fort Nelson Fire Fighters, the first Rachel’s Challenge event was introduced to Fort Nelson schools in 2009.  The Rachel’s Legacy program followed a year later.  Since then, Ms. Reddy has organised ongoing Rachel’s Challenge Legacy events and activities for students, intended to create and maintain positive cultures in Fort Nelson schools.
These have included district wide Rachel’s Rallies, School Spirit Days, i.e. Pink Shirt Day, support of other Rachel’s Challenge clubs in the district, and other anti-bullying initiatives.  Under Kanta’s leadership, F.O.R. Club students from district schools have volunteered at community events such as the local Relay For Life, sorting food for Christmas hampers, organising free hair styling for seniors by FNSS cosmetology students, hosting gatherings for seniors, and the club offers a yearly bursary for a graduating student.
Rachel’s Challenge is a non-profit organisation that offers a series of school, business, and community programs and workshops modelled after the life of Rachel Scott, the first person killed in the 1999 Columbine High School shootings.  Its mission is to inspire, equip, and empower every person to create a permanent positive culture change in their school, business, and community by starting a chain reaction of kindness and compassion.  Photo by Kathy Smith
