Ferne Lillian Stringer was born on April 8, 1929 in Piney, Manitoba. Her widowed Grandmother had immigrated to Canada in 1906 from Iceland and seled in Manitoba with four children – one being Ferne’s Mother. Ferne was raised in Piney and aended school there. She moved to Winnipeg upon completion of Grade 12 and aended Business School. Aer her graduation, she worked for a short time for e Royal Bank and then at the Canadian National Railways. During her work at CNR, she met Jack in 1953 and they were married on May 7, 1955. ey moved to Edmonton where Garth was born in 1956. Two years later Jack was transferred to Vancouver where Laurie was born in 1958, Nancy in 1959 and Bonnie in 1960. Jack’s career with CNR, CNT and then NorthwesTel had the family on the move a fair bit and aer Vancouver, they lived in Dawson Creek, Edmonton, Yellowknife, Fort Nelson and back to Edmonton. In 1979 their last move was back to Fort Nelson where they eventually retired. Ferne’s career was in accounting and she always found good jobs wherever they lived. She had unconditional support for whatever her children were involved in, which usually took her to the arena in every town they lived. She was very active with Minor Hockey and Figure Skating. Her passion was sewing and she loved it. She could sew anything from wedding dresses to drapes to skating costumes. If you ever wondered where Ferne was all you had to do is look in her sewing room. She spent her retirement enjoying her grandchildren passing on her words of wisdom. She was an avid card player and adored their dog ‘Gizmo’ Ferne enjoyed a full and vibrant life. She was diagnosed with dementia in 2005 and was cared for at home until November 2008 at which time she entered the Fort Nelson General Hospital. e Hospital became her home until her passing on May 28, 2009. e family held a Celebration of her life on June 8, 2009. Tributes were made by her children and her grandchildren. She will be remembered as a remarkable woman who gave her best in everything she did and she will be remembered for her beautiful Icelandic blue eyes. Ferne was predeceased by her parents, ora and Percy Stringer and brother Andrew Stringer. She is survived by Jack, her husband for 54 years, Son Garth ( Sharon) and daughters Ellery and Eden of St. Albert, Alberta. Daughter Laurie Dolan (Barry) – Fort Nelson, children Brendan – Dawson Creek and Shayna – Fort Nelson. Daughter Nancy Doyle – Olds Alberta, (Brent – Fort Nelson) children Brad and Kelsey – Calgary and Paige (Jason) – Fort Nelson. Daughter Bonnie Bokenfohr (Kevin), Calgary, Alberta, children Lauren-Calgary, Stephanie-Montreal, Quebec. Great granddaughter Khloe Marie – Calgary. Sisters Blanche – Oawa, Verna -Calgary and Vera – Red Deer and many nieces, nephews, extended family and good friends. Word cannot express the thanks the family extends to e Fort Nelson General Hospital and Dr. Nickson for the care of Ferne. is facility enabled Ferne to enjoy her last few months in comfort with complete dignity and the best of care and compassion with her family by her side any time of the day or night. e sta were amazing not only to Ferne but also to the family that spent time with her every day. Each and every sta member is a credit to their profession and we were so lucky to have them.
