Obituary – Mandy Morris, 67

June 5th, 1944 – February 18th, 2012

It was with great sadness that we heard recently of the death of a former resident, Madeleine (Mandy) Morris, who passed away on February 18th, 2012 in Victoria after a long illness. Mandy Morris lived in Fort Nelson with her husband Jim and two children Amanda and Iain when Dr. Morris took over the Fort Nelson Dental Clinic in 1971. They arrived here from Scotland, making many friends in Fort Nelson. When the family moved to Victoria, a third child Caroline, was born, and Mandy continued her friendships with former Fort Nelson residents, Linda Meir, Jane Turpie, and Wendy Barry. They held “Fort Nelson” days when they get together, catch up on their news and then spend time remembering their days here. A celebration of life was held in Victoria attended by family and friends. We remember Mandy as being extremely artistic and passionate about French Impressionism. Her dry, Scottish, stoic sense of humour echoed in our ears when we heard of her untimely passing. A busy mother and grandmother, Mandy was extremely active in the cultural life Victoria and supported numerous humanitarian and cultural causes. Her obituary in the Victoria Times Columnist reads: MORRIS, Madeleine of Sidney, BC passed away on February 18th, 2012. Madeleine lived her life with class, wit and dignity and her passing was the same. Madeleine was born in Glasgow, Scotland on June 5th, 1944. Education was a large part of her life, earning an M.A. from the University of Glasgow, and her Teaching Certificate, and a Masters in Art History from the University of Victoria. Closest to her heart were Madeleine’s kids and grandkids, her dear friends, and her love of the arts. She never took for granted the natural beauty of her surroundings. She was exceptionally well-read, and possessed a stunning ability to answer any historical question one might have. Madeleine truly enjoyed sharing her depth and breadth of knowledge with others in addition to constantly learning new subjects. A naturally compassionate person who realised her good fortune in life, Madeleine was inspired to support numerous community and humanitarian causes. Madeleine leaves behind her three children, Amanda, Iain and Caroline, and their partners, her four granddaughters, and many friends, all of whom will miss her dearly. Thank you to the wonderful doctors, nurses and staff in the Cardiovascular and Intensive Care Units at the Royal Jubilee Hospital for everything they did for Madeleine and her family. A celebration of life will be held at 2 PM on Thursday, March 1st in the Charlie White Theatre at the Mary Winspear Centre in Sidney. In lieu of flowers, consider making a donation reflective of Madeleine’s spirit. “To everything there is a season.” We love you Mom.
